Cooling towers have an inherent side effect of being air scrubbers. Air is being used to cool the heated
water via evaporation. As dirty air is drawn into
the cooling tower, particulate is washed from the air by the water cascading over the fill. The scrubbed air exits the tower leaving behind solids which then settle out in the tower sump. The settled debris will build up to point where it is drawn into the condenser and deposited throughout
the system – which results in:
- fouling and increased system head pressure
- decreased heat transfer and increased energy consumption
- increased unscheduled maintenance and decreased equipment life
- increased chemical usage and increased system corrosion
These reasons are why Puroflux Filtration is needed over chemical treatment.
